APTOS - Firefighters and State Parks rangers rescued a dog in a ravine near New Brighton State Beach on Tuesday after someone thought they heard screams from a child in danger.

About 12:55 p.m., someone called 911 because they heard yelping from some bushes near Potbelly Beach Road and Las Olas Drive in Aptos, said Central Fire spokesman Mike DeMars.

Firefighters and park rangers searched the area and initially saw a deer. They then found a Boxer named Sophie, who was not injured, DeMars said.

Authorities speculated that the dog might have chased the deer.

Responders rescued Sophie and reunited her with her owner about 2:50 p.m.
