SANTA CRUZ - A 23-year-old man is headed to trial on a first-degree murder charge for a second time in March.
Leopoldo Alejandro Cortes was convicted of the charge in 2008 for the stabbing death of Chris Carr. Carr, a 23-year-old former Aptos High wrestler, was stabbed to death at a La Selva Beach party in 2006.
An appeals court overturned the conviction in 2011, ruling that more testimony from a defense-hired psychiatrist should have been allowed into trial.
A Santa Cruz County judge ordered a new trial for Cortes last year.
Cortes is in custody at County Jail. He's being represented by attorney Charlie Stevens.
