SANTA CRUZ -- Dr. Jimmy Chung removed the gall bladder of a 53-year-old Scotts Valley woman through a small incision in her belly button, using a new suite of instruments with a da Vinci robotic system at Dominican Hospital for the first time last week.
Gall bladder removal has been considered major surgery but this new technique results in a faster recovery and virtually no scars, according to Dominican.
New da Vinci technology is designed to avoiding the crowding of instruments inside the body when using hand-held, laparoscopic single-incision devices.
"Eventually, we should be able to perform almost all laparoscopic surgeries through a single incision, saving the patient unnecessary scars and pain," Chung said.
He is the only doctor on the Central Coast trained to perform single-site gallbladder surgery with Da Vinci technology, according to Dominican.
Dominican Hospital was the first in the county to buy a da Vinci surgical system and in four years has performed hundreds of procedures.
