CLAREMONT - An 8-year-old boy was praised Thursday at Sumner Elementary School for organizing a toy drive for less fortunate children.

"I'm happy," said Axel Garcia Jr., after he had addressed hundreds of students, parents, school officials, local police officers and others outside the school.

The Fritz's Holiday Lights Toys for Tots Bus was at the elementary school at 10 a.m. to celebrate the Toys for Tots drive organized by Axel.

Fritz Coleman is an NBC-4 weathercaster and a team of Marine Corps representatives also joined in on the celebration.

"Since he was little, he's always wanted to help out everybody," said Axel's mother, Carolina Garcia.

"We're very happy for Axel," said his father Axel Garcia, Sr. "We're very proud of him."

Claremont Mayor Larry Schroeder gave Axel a certificate of appreciation.

Claremont Unified School Board president Jeff Stark and Superintendent James Elsasser also spoke at the event.

Sumner Elementary is at 1770 Sumner Ave.
