Host families sought for exchange students

Two Italian high school students coming to the Santa Cruz area for the 2013 Spring semester are excited to become part of an American family and experience high school life. International Student Services Santa Cruz is seeking homes for them.

Both boys are 17 years old and have younger siblings. One of the boys plays soccer, is a youth soccer trainer, skis, studies four languages and wants to be a journalist. The other likes basketball, volleyball, music, math and swimming in the ocean.

Spring Hill's record donation to Grind Out Hunger

Sprill Hill School raked in $1,700 in cash donations this year, thanks to the volunteer efforts of parent, Bokkie Keet. She inspired students and their families to give this holiday season.

"It is absolutely amazing Spring Hill's impact for providing a brighter future for so many families and kids through healthy food and education," said Willy Elliott-McCrea, the food bank's executive director.

Spring Hill School teaches its students to help people in need. This Grind Out Hunger donation drive is one way students help their community.

High GPA earns girls volleyball team honors

A collective team grade point average of 3.876 has earned the Mount Madonna School's girls varsity volleyball team the 2012-13 Fall Season Scholastic Championship Team Award.

The award, the Central Coast Section's highest honor, was established in 1985 to recognize teams with the highest collective grade-point average in their respective sport during that season of competition.

The girls varsity team previously received the award in 2007-08, while the boys varsity team received it in 1999-00, 2000-01, 2001-02, 2004-05, 2006-07, and 2007-08.

The girls team members are: tenth graders, Alyssa Feskanin, Lexi Julien, Tyler Viglizzo, and Zoe Kelly; 11th graders, Jenny Turk, Preethi Balagani, Ruby Nink, and Talia Speaker; and and 12th graders, Aimee Hopkins and Sanika Lakka.

Support jazz education by eating at Shadowbrook

Jazz lovers can support music education programs at Kuumbwa Jazz by dining at the Shadowbrook Restaurant 5:30-9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29.

Directed by Steve Wilson,, the Kuumbwa Jazz Honor Band, will hit the Rock Lounge Stage at 6 p.m.

The restaurant will donate a third of the evening's food and beverage sales to Kuumbwa.
