A representative of the Blair Johnson Arts Academy went before the Pomona Unified School District Board of Education Tuesday seeking approval for a petition to establish a charter school in the city.

This is the fourth time the program has submitted a petition.

The proposed academy would serve students in kindergarten through fifth grade and provide a program that integrates the visual and performing arts into the curriculum.

Sabrina Johnson, the school's chief executive officer, said if her petition to open the school is approved it would offer Pomona parents an alternative to traditional school programs where their children will thrive.

The item is expected to be taken up by the school board Jan. 22. At that time school board members will likely vote to grant of deny the petition, according to a district staff report.
