A man poured some kind of accelerant on the woman, then set her ablaze just after 1 a.m. outside a Walgreens store at the intersection of Van Nuys Boulevard and Sherman Way, said Lt. Damian Gutierrez of the Los Angeles Police Department's Van Nuys Station.

The woman, who had been sleeping on a bus stop bench when she was attacked, was taken to a hospital and was in critical condition, said Officer Cleon Joseph of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations section.

A witness told reporters at the scene that he saw a man come out of the Walgreens and pour something on the woman, who appeared to be homeless, before striking a match and setting her ablaze. He called 911 and followed the man until police arrived and arrested him, he said.

The name of the suspect, who is in his mid 20s, was withheld because he had not yet been booked, Joseph said.

The attack was being investigated by the fire department and an LAPD Robbery Homicide unit, Gutierrez said.
