A 60-year-old man was airlifted to a San Jose hospital on Thursday after being hit by a sport utility vehicle that fled the scene, Salinas police said.

Police said the man was crossing the street in a dark area at 58 Natividad Road when he was hit by the SUV about 7 p.m.

The SUV drove off, but was spotted by police at North Main and East Market streets.

A short pursuit ended at East Gabilan and California streets with the arrest of the SUV's 52-year-old male driver.

The injured man was taken to the hospital with head trauma, police said.

His condition was unknown.
