LOS ANGELES - A 17-month-old girl who was reported missing in Los Angeles Oct. 15 was found in Lexington, Ky., with a woman who may be her grandmother, authorities announced today.
University of Kentucky Police Chief Joe Monroe said during a news conference the toddler -- Alouette Day-Moreno-Baltierra -- was located Thursday night at a campus health care facility with 62-year-old Maria Baltierra- Dejesus.
The pair aroused suspicion when Baltierra-Dejesus was seen walking through a campus parking lot with the child, who was not properly dressed for cold weather, Monroe said.
Monroe said the woman claimed to be interested in applying for a job as a doctor, but was not cooperating with the authorities' investigation.
She and the toddler may have been in the Lexington area for several days, but authorities are uncertain as to why they were in the city or where they had been staying, Monroe said.
The toddler was in the care of Kentucky child protection services until she can be reunited with her family.
Baltierra-Dejesus, reported to be in a university health care facility, was being held on suspicion of child endangerment and custodial interference, officials said.
A Los Angeles police official said the department was working to determine which LAPD division may have taken a missing child report in the case.
