District collecting Styrofoam
The Monterey Regional Waste Management District is collecting polystyrene foam, commonly known as Styrofoam, at its recycling drop-off center through Jan. 31.
The lightweight, bulky foam, commonly used for packaging products such as appliances and electronics, will be shipped to a recycler that will convert it to architectural molding and other material, the district said.
The district's recycling drop-off center is at 14201 Del Monte Blvd. Packing peanuts will not be accepted. The center also accepts cardboard, wrapping paper, plastic containers, glass and metal.
The Styrofoam recycling effort is in conjunction with Waste Management Inc.

Highway 1 south of Big Sur will be open without restrictions Saturday and Sunday, Caltrans officials said.
Starting at 7 a.m. Monday, flaggers will restrict traffic to one-way controls through the Partington Ridge area, where a large slide closed the highway last Sunday.
Crews are clearing the debris field, repairing part of the damaged roadway and stabilizing the area, Caltrans officials said.
Motorists can expect 20-minute delays during the work.
Caltrans advised drivers to use extra caution traveling through the area.
