Trials to resume Wednesday
Two felony trials will resume Wednesday after a break for the holidays.
Jurors began deliberating before the break in the case of Maurice Ainsworth, who faces a litany of charges stemming from a 2009 home invasion and a 2010 escape.
Ainsworth, 26, was awaiting trial in the home invasion case when he allegedly attacked a Santa Cruz County sheriff's deputy and escaped from custody. That set off a five-hour manhunt during which he is alleged to have held a Russian couple at gunpoint and invaded a preschool.
Also resuming Wednesday is the trial of 43-year-old Richard Chavez, who is accused of killing his girlfriend in February 2010 at their Felton home during an alcohol-fueled argument. The prosecution will continue presenting witnesses.
Suspected drug deal nets two
A Santa Cruz woman was arrested on suspicion of possessing drugs for sale after police recovered several kinds of illicit drugs and nearly $2,000 cash in her vehicle about 11 p.m. Sunday on West Cliff Drive near Chico Avenue.
Deputy Chief Steve Clark said Angelica Hilldale, 26, was booked into County Jail on multiple counts after police recovered 1.5 ounces of crack cocaine, nearly an ounce of powder cocaine, 17 ounces of marijuana and nine grams of heroin. Prescription pills, scales and multiple
Ishmele Brewer, 32, of Livingston, was arrested in a nearby vehicle and booked into County Jail on suspicion of violating parole. Clark said officers believe he was the intended buyer of the drugs.
Police discovered the two suspects after area neighbors reported their two vehicles as suspicious, Clark said.
No new info in shooting
Watsonville police did not release more information Monday about the death of a man found with a gunshot wound to the head Saturday.
The 23-year-old man was found slumped over in a Cadillac sedan on northbound Freedom Boulevard Saturday afternoon with a handgun in his lap. He was pronounced dead later that night.
Police said Sunday the case appeared to be a suicide, but they were still investigating Monday.
