A 28-year-old Arleta man suspected of robbing his grandfather was in custody Friday after barricading himself in a motel room for nearly four hours, Los Angeles Police Department officials said.

Jason Paul Ramirez locked himself inside a room at the Budget Inn at 9151 Sepulveda Blvd. in North Hills and refused to come out prompting negotiators and a SWAT team to arrive on scene, police said.

He was reportedly the focus of a week-long robbery investigation that came to a head when detectives obtained information that Ramirez had stayed the night at the Budget Inn.

Ramirez, who has a history of illegal drug use, is suspected of robbing his grandfather three times over the last month, said Det. Luis Alarcon.

"This man's behavior had escalated toward his grandfather in such away that we needed to find him quickly," Capt. Todd Chamberlain, who heads the Mission Area for LAPD, said in a statement.

Detectives knocked on the door of the motel room and after hearing what they believed was a round being racked into a shotgun, requested a SWAT team at 7:46 a.m.

SWAT then deployed tear gas into the room and was able to get Ramirez out of the motel room without injury, Alarcon said.

No other people were in the motel room and officers did not find a shotgun.

"It's unfortunate that the victim in this case was a family member, especially because the age difference was such. His grandfather was in his 70's," Alarcon said. "His violent behavior toward his grandfather was what prompted us to try and locate him. It's sad to think of the kind of abuse he had to endure by his own grandson."

Ramirez was arrested on suspicion of robbery just before noon and taken to a local hospital as a precaution due to his exposure to the tear gas. He was later detained at Van Nuys Jail.

"The officers and detectives did the right thing to contain the motel and call SWAT," Chamberlain said. "And we have a very dangerous, drug-addicted felon who won't be brutalizing this grandfather for money to buy drugs."
