Retired federal employees group to meet Wednesday

Chapter 54 of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees will meet at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Seascape Golf Club, 610 Clubhouse Drive.

The monthly meeting will feature nurse Becky Peters as a guest speaker. Peters will discuss Lifespan, a multiservice agency providing health, social and financial services for adults in need of assistance.

Fire district offers CPR class geared toward general public

The Aptos/La Selva Fire District is offering a free adult/child/infant CPR class 6-8 p.m. Jan. 15 at 693 Soquel Drive.

The class, which is geared toward the general public and not health care provider certification, will benefit everyone from baby sitters to parents to anyone who wants to be better prepared in the event of a life-threatening cardiac emergency.

A segment on using a defibrillator machine is also included in the course.

Museum of Art & History to host January events

The Museum of Art & History is set to host three events in January at 705 Front St.:

  • Third Friday Poetry and Books Art Extravaganza will include performances, discussions, drop-in workshops and demonstrations. The event, held 5-9 p.m. Jan. 18, costs $5 general, $3 students/seniors and free for MAH members and children younger than age 12.

  • Winterpalooza, noon to 3 p.m. Jan. 19, will include winter-themed crafts and live music from the Santa Cruz Beach Bums Ukulele Band. The costs $5 general, $3 for members.

  • Classical Realism in a Modern World: A Series of Artist Talks, held 7-8:30 p.m., will feature professional artist John Peck discussing realist art. The event costs $5 general, $3 students/seniors, and is free for MAH members and Santa Cruz Academic Drawing Guild.

    Yoga Center celebrates nonprofit status, third anniversary

    Aptos Yoga Center will celebrate its third anniversary, and new nonprofit status, Jan. 12 with a day full of free, family-friendly events.

    Yoga classes will be held 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., a puppet play begins at 1 p.m. and percussionist Jim Greiner will lead a drum circle starting at 2:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required for all events.

    The center accepts tax-deductible donations that will be used to support yoga students in financial need, according to a news release.

    Free caregiving workshops offered Jan. 26

    Residents are invited to attend "Caregiver University: A Day of Learning and Sharing," an event presented by the community-based nonprofit Health Projects Center, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 26.

    Local experts will cover a range of topics. The program includes a free lunch and resource fair, and Spanish translation services are available.

    Sixth annual festival to celebrate chocolate

    The UC Santa Cruz Women's Club is sponsoring the sixth annual Santa Cruz Chocolate Festival 1-4 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Cocoanut Grove, 400 Beach St.

    The event will include a silent auction, wine tasting, cupcake decorating and a visit from the Santa Cruz Derby Girls.

    Since the inaugural event in February 2008, the annual Santa Cruz Chocolate Festival has raised more than $50,000 for re-entry student scholarships.

    New affordable housing units available in city

    City Ventures LLC, builders of Scotts Valley Town Center Collection, is releasing five designated units reserved for the Affordable Housing Program to qualifying households.

    The homes consists of four bedrooms and 2½ bathrooms at a restricted resale price. They are approximately 1,832 square feet.

    Applications will be accepted at the sales center at 237 Blue Bonnet Lane. The deadline to turn in an application is Jan. 25.

    A lottery will be held Jan. 31.
