"A Tribute to Black History in Music" will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Gardiner Spring Auditorium on the campus of Chaffey High School, 1245 N. Euclid Ave.
The free concert features the musicians of the Ontario/Chaffey Community Show Band under the direction of R.Jack Mercer and associate conductor and arranger Dr. Gabe Petrocelli.
A special array of artists who will perform on the program include the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Choir under the direction of Music Minister Leon McCrary, soloist Ebony McCrary, and Show Band family member Jim Bonner.
In addition, the Show Band will have a special guest artist, rock `n roll Hall-of-Famer Ron Ellington Shy. He will perform some of his hits during the second half of the program with the "Ron Ellington Shy Show Featuring Taber Shy" in "Bringing Back the Fifties." That show also features Ronnie Cano on drums and will be accompanied by the Show Band.
The Mt. Zion Baptist Church, established in Ontario more than 90 years ago., has a number of special ministries, one of which is the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Choir.
McCrary, born in the San Fernando Valley into a musical family, performed in the boys' choirs. He had the opportunity to sing with the likes of Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Chaka Kahn, The Letterman, Andrea and Sandra Crouch, Jessica Simpson,
McCrary now serves as minister of music at Mt. Zion where he leads a 35-voice choir, 4 musicians, 14-voice male chorus, praise dancers and his church in worship.
Ebony McCrary has lived in the Inland Empire since 1990. She has been a member of Mt. Zion for 11 years where she met her husband Leon.
Bonner has been a professional singer since the age of 12. His group "The Bonner Family" produced several successful country music albums in 80s. Bonner has been performing with Show Band for the past several decades. He is working on a CD of original songs written for him by Dr. Petrocelli.
Ron Ellington Shy was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a former member of such groups as "The Coasters," "The Drifters," and "Don and Dewey." As an actor, he has appeared on television in such programs as Dallas, Knott's Landing, and Falcon Crest.
Taber Shy, Ron's 21-year-old son, has already sung in such groups as the "Vibrations" and "Coasters," led by original guitarist Adolph Jacobs. With writing being another of his passions, he has written many original songs.
Cano is the drummer for the Ron Ellington Shy Show. He has performed with many famous artists that include Larry Dunn and Roland Batista from "Earth, Wind, and Fire," and Quinn Harris from "Tavares."
