A 16-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of breaking into a Manhattan Beach house, police said.
A search for a second suspect resulted in a lockdown at two Manhattan Beach schools to protect their students.
Homeowners told police they found two burglars in their backyard about 12:20 p.m. at their residence near 17th Street and Meadows Avenue, Manhattan Beach police Officer Stephanie Martin said.
The burglars ran.
A witness followed the 16-year-old for a few blocks, enabling police to arrest him.
The boy carried about $5,000 in jewelry stolen from the house, Martin said.
The other suspect was last seen running in the 1300 block of 18th Street.
Children were kept inside Meadows School and Manhattan Beach Preschool as police searched the area. The lockdown was lifted about 2:30 p.m., when police notified administrators that it would be safe to dismiss their students, said Carolyn Seaton, an assistant superintendent with the Manhattan Beach Unified School District.
Police from Hermosa Beach, El Segundo, Hawthorne, Redondo Beach, Gardena and Torrance helped with the search, which was called off about 3:15 p.
