The Monterey City Council approved an arrangement on Tuesday to enable the Peninsula water authority to hire a chief executive.
The council voted 5-0 to create a part-time water authority director, who would be hired as a contract employee by the six-city Monterey Peninsula Regional Water Authority.
Mayor Chuck Della Sala, president of the water authority board, said the agency had already approved of the arrangement. Monterey's city charter requires the position be filled by the city manager. The water authority would then contract with the city for the director.
Della Sala said the water authority was weighing three finalists for the job and hoped to make a selection soon.
The hourly pay for the director was set at $100. Monterey would be reimbursed at a rate of $105.20 an hour. The director is expected to work 20 hours a week.
