An 80-year-old woman was struck and killed Tuesday evening on a Gardena street, police said.

The woman was hit in the southbound lanes of Vermont Avenue north of 135th Street at 6:15 p.m. The southbound lanes of Vermont were closed from 132nd Street to 135th Street for the investigation.

Police initially reported the incident as a possible "hit-and-run," but discovered later that the driver had stopped and was at the scene, Gardena police Lt. Steve Prendergast said.

The victim's name was not released. It was not immediately clear if she was in a crosswalk or at an intersection.
