Witnesses told police they saw the three arguing on the 900 block of Laurel just after 9 a.m. The driver of the Jetta fired a shot, which penetrated the fence of a home down the street. No one was injured.
The two men who were on the sidewalk fled the scene but officers found them soon after, hiding in a nearby apartment, Santa Cruz Deputy Police Chief Steve Clark said. They were not cooperative with officers.
Two minutes after the radio call was dispatched, the police department's school resource officer spotted the suspect's car a few blocks away. Officer Steve Pendleton was working in the area of Santa Cruz High School when he spotted the car, which he followed to the 100 block of Center Street. There he and other officers initiated a car stop.
The driver, identified as 20-year-old Jonah Namauu, was arrested. He was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail on suspicion of discharging a firearm in a school zone, possessing a firearm in a school zone, discharging a firearm from a vehicle and possessing a loaded firearm in a vehicle.
The gun, a Glock 17 model handgun, was recovered from the Jetta along with an expended bullet casing. The Jetta was impounded.
