Santa Cruz police were dispatched to the 300 block of Ocean around 12:40 a.m. Friday for reports of a bloodied man carrying a big stick.
Officers contacted the 24-year-old man, who told him he was walking while carrying his wife's sandals when he was attacked by three suspected Sureno members. They stole the shoes, which he estimated were worth about $150-$200. Deputy police chief Steve Clark did not know what kind of sandals they were. He said it also was unclear why the man was carrying the sandals. The man's wife was not with him at the time.
When police spoke with the man, he reluctantly told him he was armed with the stick because he planned to go and try to get the shoes back.
No arrests were made and the victim did not provide further description of his assailants other than telling police they were three Latino males.
