The Manhattan Beach Police Department is partnering with the American Red Cross on Tuesday for the seventh annual "Battle of the Badges" blood drive.

It runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Manhattan Beach police/fire community room at 420 15th St.

The event encourages all badge-carrying personnel, along with their friends and family, to see who can donate the most blood and, ultimately, save lives.

The goal of this year's drive is to have at least 5,500 personnel donate blood.

"Saving and protecting life is paramount for the Manhattan Beach Police Department, and this is a very personal way we can give of ourselves," Police Chief Eve Irvine said.

According to the Red Cross, blood supplies typically fall to critically low levels during the winter months. Donations are given to accident victims, cancer patients, premature babies and burn patients.

To make an appointment, visit www.redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code BADGE. For more information, email or call Officer Stephanie Martin at smartin@citymb.info or 310-802-5186.

All donors will receive a free T-shirt, a coupon for a free appetizer at Mimi's Cafe and a coupon for complimentary admission for two to the Laugh Factory. ID is required to donate.
