A male teacher who was removed from a Wilmington elementary school last year amid a sexual misconduct probe was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of molesting 12 female students, police said.

Robert Pimental, 57, of Newport Beach was charged with 15 counts of lewd conduct with children and continuous sexual abuse. He was held on $12 million bail, Los Angeles police Cmdr. Andrew Smith said.

Los Angeles Unified School District officials removed Pimental from his fourth-grade class at George de la Torre Jr. Elementary School on March 15, 2012, after the parents of five families appeared at the Harbor Division station to make sexual battery allegations against him. Sexual battery involves inappropriate touching.

Police officials at the time said the investigation involved touching on the outer portions of the children's clothing, although one student claimed "skin-to-skin" contact.

The case at that time involved children from five families. The children were current students at the school on Island Avenue.

The school's principal at the time also was replaced.

Pimental had worked for the district since 1974.

A complaint filed against him shows most of the crimes occurred in 2012, but date to 2010.
