MONTEREY COUNTY - A Capitola resident is slated for a preliminary hearing Wednesday on allegations she committed identity theft and tried to pass forged checks.

Kristin Diane Nyunt, 38, was arrested last week after an investigation by the Monterey County District Attorney's Office.

Nyunt is charged with two counts of forgery, two counts of second-degree commercial burglary and five counts of identity theft, said Monterey County deputy district attorney Meredith Sillman.

Sillman said Nyunt tried to pass two forged checks in late 2011 but employees at the bank noticed the checks were suspicious and alerted authorities. She said the investigation into the identity theft is still continuing.

Nyunt pleaded not guilty to the charges this week. She's being held in Monterey County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.
