Planting to mark celebration of World Wetlands Day
Watsonville Wetlands Watch and the city of Watsonville are inviting the community to celebrate World Wetlands Day by planting 2,000 native plants at a wetlands restoration site from 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 2.
Teams will assemble at Landmark Elementary School, 235 Ohlone Parkway, and walk as a group to the restoration site.
Organizers say participants should bring drinking water, and wear layered work clothes, sturdy shoes and a sun hat.
Wetlands Watch will provide tools, gloves and a snack.
No experience is necessary, and community service credits are available.

Registration for spring semester of Santa Cruz Adult School open
Registration for the spring semester of Santa Cruz Adult School is now open.
Santa Cruz Adult School is offering a variety of classes, including ongoing English as a Second Language, GED and high school diploma classes at 319 La Fonda Ave.
The school will offer new courses this semester, including build your own computer, popular and interesting computer topics, beginning glass art, creative writing, sewing basics, sing your soul song, photography, basic computer skills, computer safety- safeguard your data and U.S. citizenship, as well as a variety of parenting classes.
The school will also continue to have classes in conversational Spanish, ceramics and oil and acrylic painting, as well as four parent participation preschools.

Child abuse prevention training workshop set for Feb. 8
Court Appointed Special Advocates and the Child Abuse Prevention Council are hosting a workshop to address cultural competency in the work of preventing child abuse and neglect.
The workshop is aimed at individuals working with children and families in the area.
The four-hour workshop will be led by Jaime Molina, prevention and early intervention coordinator for Santa Cruz Mental Health Services.
It will take place at Cabrillo College in the Koppes Community Room 5005, located inside the Horticulture Building at 6500 Soquel Drive, Aptos. Continental breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the workshop slated to run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Quilt association to host 35th annual show Feb. 23
The Pajaro Valley Quilt Association is hosting its 35th annual Quilt Show 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 23 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, 2601 E. Lake Ave.
The event will include an exhibit of more than 400 quilts, dolls and clothing.
In addition, there will be ongoing demonstrations, a live auction, a merchant mall, flea market and featured speaker Gloria Loughman.
Admission is $8 general, $7 seniors, $6 advance and good for both days.

Shadowbrook Restaurant is hosting the 14th annual Dine for Court Appointed Special Advocates on Feb. 12.
The Capitola restaurant will donate a third of patrons' food and beverage tab to support CASA and the organization's work with local children in the foster care system. It starts at 5 p.m.
