WATSONVILLE - A 23-year-old man was shot Tuesday night in the area of Brewington Avenue and Arbol Drive, Watsonville police said.

Officers were dispatched to the quiet, residential neighborhood around 8:15 p.m. for reports of gun shots. They arrived to find a man on the ground, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Sgt. Brian Ridgway said Tuesday the man was airlifted to a Bay Area trauma center, but his injuries weren't believed to be life-threatening.

The victim had been on the sidewalk when a car drove past him and then stopped. A person exited the car and approached the victim on foot, firing a gun multiple times. He struck the victim once, then ran back to the car. He was last seen driving westbound on Crestview Drive. Ridgway said the shooting is believed to be gang-motivated.

Police ask anyone with information on the shooting to call the Watsonville Police Department tipline at 728-3544 or the investigations bureau at 768-3352.
