SANTA CRUZ

Man suspected of downloading, distributing child porn

When Santa Cruz police investigators served a search warrant in a possible child pornography case, they found the suspect's computer actively downloading illicit images, Deputy Chief Steve Clark said.

Police in Santa Cruz began working with detectives from the Pleasant Hill Police Department in November to investigate online videos of child pornography being distributed.

Using forensic software, detectives were able to track the source of the videos to Tate Middour, a 38-year-old Santa Cruz resident. Investigators allege Middour was seeking out, downloading and redistributing online child pornography from a computer in his home.

When police investigators served a search warrant at Middour's home, they found a computer downloading child pornography, Clark said. Middour was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of charges of possession, depiction and distribution of child pornography. He posted bail four hours after being booked into Santa Cruz County Jail.

Clark said some of the child victims depicted in the pornography are known to law enforcement and investigators are working to determine whether Middour also was producing child pornography.

The Shaffer Road resident also is believed to have had contact with a number of children. Police are asking anyone whose child has had contact with Middour to call detectives at 831-420-5820 or the anonymous tipline at 831-420-5995.

WATSONVILLE

Man shot Tuesday night

A 23-year-old man shot Tuesday night was listed in stable condition Wednesday, Watsonville police said.

Officers were dispatched to the area of Brewington Avenue and Arbol Drive, a quiet residential neighborhood, around 8:15 p.m. after reports of gunshots. They found a man on the ground, suffering from a gunshot wound.

The man was airlifted to a Bay Area trauma center but his injuries weren't believed to be life-threatening, Sgt. Brian Ridgway said Tuesday.

The victim had been on the sidewalk when a car drove past him, then stopped. A person exited the car and approached the victim on foot, firing a gun multiple times. The victim was struck once, and the shooter then ran back to the car. He was last seen driving westbound on Crestview Drive. Ridgway said the shooting is believed to be gang-motivated.

Suspect information was not immediately available Wednesday. The shooting isn't believed to be connected to the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old Watsonville man on Jan. 18, Lt. Jorge Zamora said. Detectives are following up on possible leads in that case, he said.

Police asked that anyone with information on the shooting call the Watsonville Police Department tipline at 728-3544 or the investigations bureau at 768-3352.
