Tax preparers sought to aid elderly
Alliance on Aging is seeking volunteers for its annual Tax Counseling for the Elderly program, which partners with the Internal Revenue Service and state Franchise Tax Board to provide free assistance to seniors in preparing their federal and state income tax returns.
Tax preparation experience is required, with additional training to be provided by the Alliance, the IRS and Franchise Tax Board. Volunteers will assist at county locations weekdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Courtney named assistant fire chief
Monterey fire Capt. Jim Courtney of Pacific Grove has been named assistant fire chief, effective Friday.
Courtney was active in consolidating the Monterey, Pacific Grove and Carmel fire departments and has served on the executive board of the Monterey Firefighters Association for 11 years, including as president and vice president.
The Monterey Fire Department also serves Sand City, the Presidio of Monterey, Naval Postgraduate School and La Mesa Village.

Police to lead gang presentation
The Seaside Police Department will hold a gang awareness presentation in Spanish, with English translation, at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Oldemeyer Center, 986 Hilby Ave.
The presentation will include the same information presented at a meeting in November 2012, police said. The talk will cover gang activity, common gang indicators, gang trends, and intervention and prevention.
