WATSONVILLE - An intoxicated 20-year-old man leaving a Super Bowl party with his girlfriend and young children slammed the car he was driving into a Lakeview Road home Sunday and struck a woman inside, causing her to suffer major injuries, the California Highway Patrol said.
The 47-year-old woman was trapped by a dresser and the car before she was extricated and flown to a Santa Clara County trauma center, officer Sarah Jackson said.
The man's 19-year-old wife also suffered moderate injuries in the 8 p.m. crash near College Road, Jackson said.
The driver of the 2010 Ford Fusion, Jose Lopez of Watsonville, had a blood alcohol level about twice the legal limit and was driving 70 mph in a 35 mph zone when he lost control and plowed through a fence and into the home, she said.
The couple's children, ages 1 and 2, were not hurt, she said.
Lopez was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence, felony child endangerment and driving without insurance, Jackson said.
She said the CHP was going to work with the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control to investigate who provided alcohol to Lopez, who is underage.
