The Carmel City Council on Tuesday will consider what it wants from a new planning director and how much the city will pay.

The council will consider adoption of a salary range and formal job description for a planning and building director.

Sean Conroy, the city's former planning and building manager, took a job last fall as planning director in Mapleton, Utah.

The proposed annual salary range is $127,320 to $154,752.

The director manages the city's planning, building inspection, code enforcement and related operations. The person in the job answers directly to City Administrator Jason Stilwell.

A council report says the planning director works "to preserve the unique natural environment and 'village character'" of Carmel's residential and commercial areas.

Also Tuesday, the Carmel council will consider:

· An appeal filed by Jacqueline Simonelli over Planning Commission approvals for a new residence on Lincoln Street near Fifth Avenue on property owned by Dennis Levett.

· Approving the expenditure of an additional $16,015 for professional services and studies related to the Monterey Peninsula Regional Water Authority.

· Hiring Carver & Schicketanz Architects to prepare drawings for the beach restrooms project and to seek alternative funding for construction.
