SOQUEL -- February marks "adopt a rescued rabbit month" and local rabbit rescue group Rabbit Haven is celebrating by holding two adoption showcases.

This year's theme is "Warm your heart, warm your home, adopt a rescued rabbit."

According to Rabbit Haven staff, rabbits are currently the third-most common animals abandoned at shelters.

Rescued rabbits make excellent house pets and even can be litter-box trained. A well-cared for house rabbit live about 10 years.

The Rabbit Haven will be holding two adoption events in Soquel to honor adopt a rescued rabbit month, which was started by the ASPCA 11 years ago. An event also was held in Sunnyvale last weekend.

Adoption showcases will take place Saturday and Feb. 23 at Pet Pals in Soquel from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pet Pals is at 3660 Soquel Drive.

A plethora of rabbits will be available for adoption, and staff also will provide nail trims by donation as well as plenty of educational materials.

All Rabbit Haven rabbits are spayed and neutered, and each adoption comes with coupons and a free first veterinary exam.
