Deputies to remove illegal campsites, trash

Santa Cruz County sheriff's deputies plan to clean up illegal campsites around Mount Hermon and Graham Hill roads on Thursday.

Sgt. John Habermehl said there has been criminal activity and drug use at the camps, which are under bridges and border private property. Deputies recently posted notices to vacate the areas.

Authorities plan to remove garbage at the sites from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday.

Top elections assistant named

Santa Cruz County Clerk Gail Pellerin has appointed Tricia Webber to serve as assistant county clerk, the county announced this week.

Webber steps into a previously unfilled role, and has worked in numerous areas with the office, including overseeing a post-election audit program. In 2008 she was recognized by the county for outstanding management of the November 2008 election.

Webber has a bachelor's degree in international business from Fresno State and is a former Santa Cruz County teacher. She also co-chairs a state credential program for election officials, and is a member of the California Association of Clerks and Election Officials, working on several of the group's subcommittees.

Susan Stuart has rounded up a cast of local actors to present a murder mystery for the Aptos Chamber of Commerce to solve at the Rio Sands Hotel, 116 Aptos Beach Drive, 5-7 p.m. Thursday.

The Rio Sands community room will be transformed into the captain's cocktail reception aboard the cruise ship "Mystery of the Seas." There will be a no-host bar, food from Kiss Catering, business networking, and a prize, a $75 gift certificate to Cafe Rio. Cost is $5 for members, $10 for nonmembers. Tie the knot on Valentine's Day

Wedding bells will ring at the Santa Cruz County Government Center on Valentine's Day when the county's deputy marriage commissioners will perform civil marriage ceremonies throughout the day and evening.

The cost is $100.

A valid marriage license prior to the scheduled ceremony and at least one witness are required.

Each couple may have no more than 15 guests.

Ceremonies will be broadcast live on the Internet via the county's "WedCam" on the County Clerk's website at
