Police stop taxi, arrest passenger

Police pulled over a taxi after seeing a 1-year-old sitting unrestrained in his mother's lap, then arrested a man in the back seat with them.

Police said officers in the violence suppression unit pulled over the taxi at John and California streets about 8:40 p.m. Wednesday. A passenger in the back seat, Jose Garcia, 21, was not cooperative with officers and they requested he get out of the car, police said.

As he did, police said, a firearm was found in the seat.

Garcia was later found to be on parole and in possession of marijuana and methamphetamine, police said.

He was arrested and booked into Monterey County Jail on firearm, drug and parole violation charges, police said.

The child's mother, who told police that she didn't know Garcia and that he had simply offered her a ride, was cited for not having her son in a car seat, police said.
