Package forces evacuation
The emergency room of Natividad Medical Center in Salinas was evacuated for about two hours Monday morning for fear a bomb may have been left in a bathroom.
A hospital employee found a suspicious package in a unisex bathroom in the emergency area at around 9:30 a.m., said Salinas Police Cmdr. David Craybill. The employee and a supervisor determined the package warranted further scrutiny and they called authorities.
Patients in the emergency room and second floor began to be transported to other areas of the hospital around 10 a.m., Craybill said.
The Monterey County Sheriff's bomb squad arrived on scene around 11:30 a.m. Investigators determined the cell phones wrapped with duct tape and inside a cloth bag were not an explosive device. The evacuation was called off around noon.

Glenn Edwards, 19, was arrested about 11:30 p.m. Sunday on charges of robbery with a firearm.
Edwards had escaped police Saturday night after officers responded to a tip about 9 p.m. that he was at the Gateway Lodge. After police surrounded the motel, Edwards and his girlfriend, 18-year-old April Nicole Buckley, were spotted leaving their room.
Police said Buckley was caught a short while later, but Edwards jumped over several fences. Buckley was booked on charges of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and committing a felony while free on bail.
An extensive search commenced for Edwards with several, but was called off about 10:45 p.m. Saturday. Police then coordinated another search Sunday night about an hour before finding Edwards.
