CLAREMONT - School board members last week heard a variety of opinions on what to do about disposing of the district's Service Center surplus property.

On Jan. 17, a surplus advisory committee recommended two properties be declared as surplus: the Service Center at 700 W. Base Line Road and the La Puerta property at 2475 N. Forbes Ave.

Resident Joe Salas said he hoped the Claremont Unified school board would consider not selling the Base Line property because the new Service Center's proposed location appeared too close to San Antonio High School and could have a negative impact on students.

Resident Dave Nemer said the proposed new location could also take away "space and sight lines" for nearby residents.

Lisa Shoemaker, assistant superintendent of business services, said the Base Line property should be prime real estate because "we do know infill properties in Claremont are rare and very attractive."

Board members brought up the subject for information only, and more discussions will take place.

Additionally, the board was provided a 2013-14 budget update and calendar and approved the receipt of a revised charter school petition that was previously denied on June 7.
