Santa Cruz SPCA

Pet of the Week

Eddie's owners spent months searching for a home that would allow dogs. They felt extremely lucky to have finally found a dog-friendly place, but the luck suddenly faded when the landlord decided that Eddie looked too much like a pit bull and revoked his decision to allow dogs at the signing of the lease. Because Eddie was adopted from us as a puppy, he was welcomed back to the Santa Cruz SPCA with open arms as a grown 2-year-old.

The landlord may have pegged Eddie as a bully-breed at a glance but in reality he's a boxer/shepherd mix, and an extremely well behaved and socialized one at that. We can imagine how much his previous owners must miss him because Eddie is the type of dog to be sorely missed. Not only is he gorgeous with a deep red coat, black ears and face a white patch on his chest, but he's kind, playful, sweet, comical and friendly.

Not often do we have our large dogs mixed in with the tiny ones, but Eddie's favorite partners in crime are a 4-pound Terrier and a 6-pound Chihuahua. They throw toys to each other and he lets them hang off of his ears and cheeks with not a care in the world. He'll even let them win at a game of tug-of-war like a true gentleman should. Not only does he enjoy the little ones but he's also buddied up to a Catahoula hound, a Great Dane and even a cat!

He's very friendly with us humans as well and enjoys the company of children and adults alike. He seems to choose certain people who he adores, certain ones he likes and others he cares less about. No matter his feelings towards you, he's always polite. He walks well on a leash and knows the basic commands of sit, stay, come and lay-down. His owners reported him to be potty-trained, crate-trained, very well-behaved inside the house and not a big barker. He's still a young guy and loves to play and run so if you are looking for the type of dog to go to the beach, hiking, camping, and running "... Eddie's your boy!

At about 40 pounds, Eddie is a solid medium-size dog similar to the size of a boxer. He's athletically built with a long wagging tail and adorable ears that flop this way and that.

If you are looking for a good-sized medium dog who has all the tools on board to be a loving, devoted and social member of the family, you've absolutely got to come meet Eddie. He's a kick!
