SANTA CRUZ -- Crews are expected to break ground on the new SPCA facility on Chanticleer Avenue in June, even as the organization continues its efforts to raise funds for the building and operating costs, with a fundraising event coming up next weekend.

The SPCA of Santa Cruz County has partnered with Goodwill Industries of Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties for the event, which starts Friday and runs through Feb. 24. Residents are asked to bring household items such as clothing, shoes, accessories and small housewares items to the Walgreens parking lot on Soquel Avenue, where volunteers will load them into a trailer provided by Goodwill. Items can also be dropped off at the shelter, at 2685 Chanticleer Ave. Furniture will not be accepted.

The SPCA touts the event as a "win-win-win," since the Goodwill will receive goods that can later be sold, residents can clear out their living areas of unwanted items and the SPCA will receive a check from Goodwill.

"If we can fill that trailer with things they can sell later on, we will get $1,000," said Lisa Carter, the SPCA's executive director.

Those funds will be set aside for the new, 8,400-square-foot building, more than 10 times larger than its existing building, also located on Chanticleer Avenue. The budget just for the building is $3.5 million, but the SPCA needs to raise additional funds for ongoing operating costs, Carter said, adding the final drawings are being prepared and they're working to establish a "sound business plan."

"We're really, really excited about it," she said. "It's going to be great."

Naming rights for the building and individual rooms are also still available. The "cageless" facility is designed to hold up to 150 animals -- three times the capacity of the current facility -- with the first floor reserved for dogs and cats to roam free around in rooms above.

The SPCA purchased the half-acre site in 2010 for $571,000, and construction is slated to be complete late this year.
