Teens flee Highway 1 crash

Three teens fled Tuesday after the Jeep they were riding in hit another vehicle and flipped over on the right shoulder of northbound Highway 1, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Officer Nick Petrinovich said the Jeep was traveling north of Freedom Boulevard when the driver made an unsafe turn and struck a Volkswagen sedan traveling in the same direction at 6:30 p.m. The Volkswagen came to rest on the right shoulder; the sole occupant was uninjured.

Three occupants in the Jeep, all younger than 18, ran from the scene but were contacted by the CHP nearby on Soquel Drive, Petrinovich said. The three, one of whom complained of pain, were not arrested pending further investigation.

Petrinovich said alcohol or drug use is not believed to be a factor. Traffic slowed for a short period while the CHP investigated.

Cal Fire: Controlled burn sparks calls

A controlled burn off Soquel Drive and Trout Gulch Road sparked calls about a wildland fire Monday, but Cal Fire dispatchers said the fire was a permitted burn of two large piles of vegetation.

The fire was reported shortly before 8 a.m. and Aptos La Selva Fire Protection responded with Cal Fire.

Later Monday, Cal Fire officials said the fire was under control and they had not needed to intervene.

SANTA CRUZ

No arrest in fatal downtown shooting

More than a week after a 32-year-old martial arts instructor was gunned down outside a popular Santa Cruz bar, no one has been arrested in his slaying.

Pauly Silva was fatally shot around 12:30 a.m. Feb. 9 outside the Red Restaurant and Bar on Cedar and Locust streets. Santa Cruz Deputy Police Chief Steve Clark said Monday the investigation is being hampered by uncooperative witnesses.

"We're getting misinformation from a lot of people," Clark said.

That's stalling the investigation and "doing a disservice to the victim," he said.

Clark has said that while police don't think that Silva was in a gang, the shooting is believed to be gang-related.

Two men were arrested in Watsonville shortly after the shooting in a car that matched the description of the suspect vehicle but they have not been charged in the killing, Clark said. A third man who was arrested in Santa Cruz also has not been charged.

WATSONVILLE

Firefighters douse chimney fire

A blaze in the casing surrounding a fireplace flue may have smoldered for days before flaming up Monday, an official said.

Watsonville firefighters responded to the townhouse on Montebello Drive just after 3 p.m.

The blaze was contained within the wooden casing surrounding the metal flue, Division Chief Pablo Barreto said. But from the extent of the damage, it appeared the fire had been "burning for quite a while," possibly days, he said.

Barreto said the cause is under investigation, but it serves as a reminder of the need for annual chimney checks by a licensed professional. Damage at the Montebello home was minimal, but if the blaze had flared up at night, when the family was asleep, the outcome could have been much different, he said.

Four engines and a ladder truck responded to the scene.
