A man and woman drowned Friday for undetermined reasons while scuba diving in Whalers Cove at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve south of Carmel.
Capt. Carlos Aguilera of the Carmel Highlands Fire Department said firefighters were dispatched at 2:45 p.m. to the location, where State Parks lifeguards were already performing CPR on one of the victims.
"At that point, we got in a boat with State Parks lifeguards and located the second victim floating in the water about 50 feet from the rocks," Aguilera said.
CPR was performed on the second victim at the scene.
Both divers were transported to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, where they died soon after arrival.
Identification of the divers hasn't been released.
Cal Fire personnel and Monterey County Sheriff's deputies assisted in the recovery.
Coast Guard rescues stranded kayaker
The Coast Guard rescued a kayaker who sent a distress call on Thursday after failing to make it back to shore in rough seas near Pacific Grove.
Executive Officer Noah Hudson said the call for help came about 1:45 p.m.
"The information we received was that the kayaker was approximately three-quarters of a mile off the coast at Lovers Point, and he felt like the waters had become too rough for him to make it back to shore," Hudson said. "We launched a crew that located him, determined that he was not hypothermic and brought
Hudson said the kayaker did not require medical assistance.
rob two markets
Three robbers pulled off stickups of two markets within 20 minutes of each other Thursday, sheriff's deputies said.
The first robbery happened about 8:40 a.m. at the Oak Park Market, 336 San Juan Grade Road outside Salinas, where the robbers couldn't get cash but took a bottle of Crown Royal, deputies said. The robbers displayed a pistol.
The second holdup took place at the Elkhorn Superette, 2016 Elkhorn Road outside Castroville, where the gunmen took cash, alcohol and a wallet from a clerk, deputies said.
Two handguns were drawn by the robbers.
One robber wore a white Chicago Bulls cap with a red brim, deputies said.
