North High School senior Hailey Huff and Carey Gromis, a special needs teacher, reached out recently to a company that makes custom-built wheelchairs, facilitating a donation that will help transport students around campus.
Convaid Wheelchairs has donated two wheelchairs - a Convaid Cruiser and EZ Rider - to the school's special education program.
The program is led by Gromis, a special education teacher for the Los Angeles Office of Education. North High has five classrooms across campus dedicated to special-needs students and often needs wheelchairs to get students to classrooms.
"I've heard my mom talking endlessly about Convaid's compassion for the community and how they help thousands of kids and families with special needs kids every year," said Huff, who serves as Gromis' teacher's aide, in a statement. "The humanitarian efforts from Mr. Gromis and Convaid have inspired me to study speech pathology at San Diego State this coming fall and to help make a difference."
