Pedestrian suffers major injuries in East Zayante Road crash, CHP says

A man suffered major injuries when he was struck by a car about 11 p.m. Saturday outside Trout Farm Inn on East Zayante Road, the California Highway Patrol said.

It appears the man was intoxicated and had been denied access to Trout Farm Inn when he crossed the street and was struck, officer L. Bowden said.

A young Gilroy man driving a Toyota Prius swerved and tried to avoid the man, but could not, Bowden said.

The pedestrian appeared to be in his late 20s or early 30s, he said.

He was flown to a Santa Clara County trauma center, Bowden said.

Couple arrested on Encinal Street in alleged meth sales, police say

Police Friday night arrested a couple who had been living in a Harvey West area storage unit and allegedly selling methamphetamine, officers said.

The Santa Cruz Police Department's Street Crimes Unit was investigating reports of possible drug activity at a storage rental business in the 200 block of Encinal Street about 5 p.m. Friday when they found 38-year-old Sherry Renae Edwards and 39-year-old Devin McKnight in possession of drugs, packaging materials and a cellphone that appeared to have been used to arrange drug sales, officer Eric Hoppe said.

McKnight was on probation for possession of methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine for sales and burglary, Hoppe said. Edwards was on probation for being a felon in possession of a firearm, being under the influence of drugs while in possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm on school grounds, he said.

They were arrested on suspicion of possessing methamphetamine for sale, he said.

Both listed the Homeless Resource Center as their only address, but it appeared they were living in the storage unit, Hoppe said.
