Stone introduces fracking bill
Assemblyman Mark Stone has introduced legislation aimed at ensuring safe disposal of wastewater used in hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, for oil or gas extraction.
AB 669 would require approval of wastewater disposal plans by regional water quality boards before drilling. The permitted plan then would be submitted to the state Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources.
The bill is supported by Aromas Cares for Our Environment, a community group concerned about the potential for fracking in and around Santa Cruz County.

Economic update seminar set
The Santa Cruz chapter of Thrivent Financial will host an economic update seminar 2-3 p.m. and 6-7 p.m. Thursday at the Live Oak Community Center, 1740 17th Ave.

Rally against drone use slated
A rally against the use of military drones will be held 5-6 p.m. Friday at the corner of Cooper Street and Pacific Avenue in downtown Santa Cruz.
Women In Black of Santa Cruz and other peace groups are sponsoring the event. Co-sponsors include CodePink Santa Cruz, People United for Peace of SC, Peace and Freedom Party SC, and the Resource Center for Nonviolence.

Genealogical society to meet
The Genealogical Society of Santa Cruz County will meet from 1-3 p.m. March 7 at the Scotts Valley Library meeting room, 251 Kings Village Road.
This meeting is free and open to the public. Dr. Warren Pratt will present methods to break down genealogical brick walls. His lecture draws on examples from his personal quest to solve a 200-year-old family mystery. Pratt is originally from Kentucky but currently lives in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Animal shelter to benefit from Goodwill collections
The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter and UnChained Inc. have partnered with Goodwill Industries of Santa Cruz County for a fundraising event 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 15-17.
Residents are asked to bring clothing, shoes, accessories, household items, books, e-waste and other knick-knacks to the shelter, at 2200 Seventh Ave. Furniture will not be accepted. The shelter and UnChained -- a nonprofit that helps reduce violence, child abuse and animal abuse through animal-assisted therapy programs -- will receive funding in exchange for each storage container filled.

Baroque Festival performs 'Music of Scotland'
As part of the Santa Cruz Baroque Festival, the Baltimore Consort will perform "Music of Scotland" 7:30 p.m. March 16 at the UC Santa Cruz Recital Hall.
The evening will include Native Aires, songs by A Courtly Poet and traditional Scotch humour. The Baltimore Consort last performed in Santa Cruz in 2000.

DAVENPORT
Center hosts docent training
The newly opened Racho del Oso Nature and History Center will host a series of volunteer trainings starting in April.
The center provides information about the natural and cultural history of the Waddell Valley area. The training involves a series of classes on ecology, park habitats, local history and demonstrations, according to a news release from the state Department of Parks and Recreation. Training days will be held on Saturdays from April 13 through May.
Meanwhile, a series of events is slated for the coming weeks, including a wildflower hike and fireside stories on March 10, a hike to Berry Creek Falls on March 24, and a coastal cleanup on March 24.
