A Salinas man already charged with killing a Castroville teenager in 2010 was charged with another murder at a Salinas apartment complex the same year.
On Wednesday, Salinas police said Kevin Letcher Rogers, 24, was charged with first-degree murder with gang enhancements for the April 28, 2010, slaying of William Taylor, 32.
Taylor, a Seaside resident with a record of drug and theft cases, was found fatally wounded by police just before 11 p.m. outside an apartment on Heather Circle.
In what had been a slow-moving investigation, detectives received "some information that tied the package together" linking Rogers to Taylor's death, Salinas police spokesman Officer Miguel Cabrera said.
Rogers is in Monterey County Jail facing charges in the December 2010 killing of Efren Hernandez Vargas, 18, who was shot on a Castroville street. Rogers was also charged with soliciting the murder of a witness in the case. He has an April 15 jury trial scheduled.
A police press release said the homicides were unrelated.
Taylor was shot after he stepped out of an apartment where he was staying, police said at the time.
Police said Taylor was known to associate with gang drug dealers, but they said at the time it was unclear whether his death was gang-related. Taylor's murder happened about a week after a major gang sweep called Operation Knockout resulted in the arrest of 41 people allegedly connected to Norteño drug-dealing operations.
