Live grenade removed from truck

The Santa Cruz County Bomb Team removed a live hand grenade from a U-Haul truck in Watsonville after a man turned it in to police Thursday night.

No one was injured and the grenade was taken to a landfill for destruction.

Police were investigating a fight and stabbing about 8:45 p.m. Thursday on the 1700 block of Freedom Boulevard when they were approached by a man who said he wanted to turn in a grenade, said Watsonville police Sgt. Eric Taylor.

The man said he found the explosive in a storage locker where he had put items that belonged to two deceased relatives.

He did not know about the grenade until he opened an old box, which he loaded into a U-Haul truck. He stopped at the shopping center parking lot on Freedom Boulevard when he saw police to ask for their help.

As a precaution, authorities cleared the area around the truck.
