Officials: Fire destroys duplex on Bronte Avenue
Fire broke out in a duplex on Bronte Avenue off East Lake Avenue about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, sending flames shooting up through the roof and gutting the residence, the Watsonville Fire Department reported.
A woman was home at the time, but was able to get out of her home without serious injury, Division Chief Chris Johnson said.
She did suffer some minor smoke inhalation and a bit of her hair was burned, Johnson said. She was checked out by paramedics at the scene and released, he said.
Red Cross officials offered a hand since half of the duplex was left uninhabitable, but the woman was planning to stay with friends, he said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, Johnson said. He said it began in the back of the home.
Also responding to the "full first alarm response" were Cal Fire, Aptos Fire, North Monterey County Fire and American Medical Response.
