WATSONVILLE - After a man dropped off what appeared to be a homemade M80 firework at the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's branch office on Green Valley Road about 8 a.m., deputies closed down the road and called the bomb squad.
According to deputy April Skalland, the man discovered the explosive under his car parked at his home in a South County neighborhood. Skalland didn't know exactly where the man lived, but said deputies don't believe he was targeted. She said it appears someone in the neighborhood may be manufacturing the explosives and setting them off.
M80s are large fireworks, which explode with a loud boom. They are illegal in California.
