Thirteen middle and high schools in Contra Costa County are among 218 statewide that have been named California Distinguished Schools for 2013 based on academic achievement and innovative practices.
"These schools have gone the extra mile to provide high-quality instruction that puts their students on the right path toward career and college," said state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson in a statement. "Given the enormous challenges schools have faced in recent years, it is inspiring to see this kind of success in so many schools. Our future depends on meeting the needs of every student no matter where they come from or where they live."
Contra Costa County schools recognized were: Campolindo High in Moraga and Miramonte High in Orinda (Acalanes district); M.H. Stanley Middle School in Lafayette (Lafayette district); Heritage High in Brentwood (Liberty district); College Park High in Pleasant Hill, Diablo View Middle School in Clayton and Foothill Middle School in Walnut Creek (Mt. Diablo district); Orinda Intermediate in Orinda (Orinda district); and Charlotte Wood Middle School and Diablo Vista Middle School in Danville, along with Gale Ranch Middle School, Iron Horse Middle School and Windemere Ranch Middle School in San Ramon (San Ramon Valley district).
The program recognizes elementary and secondary schools in alternating years based on a variety of criteria, including closing the achievement gap and describing two "signature practices" staff members believe have contributed to students' success.
Alameda County schools honored were Canyon Middle (Castro Valley district), Wells Middle (Dublin district), William Hopkins Junior High (Fremont district), East Avenue Middle (Livermore Valley district), Oakland Charter High (Oakland district) and Harvest Peak Middle School (Pleasanton district).
