APTOS - California Highway Patrol officers in Santa Cruz County wrote 1,272 tickets for distracted driving in April and arrested eight people as a result of the stops.

The citations were for talking on a cellphone while driving or sending text messages with hand held phones while driving, said CHP officer Sarah Jackson.

The citation tally more than doubled the CHP's April 2012 total of 619 distracted driving tickets in Santa Cruz County.

April was Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and CHP officers also went to Santa Cruz County high schools to talk about distracted driving.
