Driver killed in single-car crash
A 31-year-old man was killed Saturday when the vehicle he was driving struck a utility pole near Holohan Road and Laken Drive outside Watsonville, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The man, who died at the scene, was driving west bound on Holohan about 10:30 a.m. when he drove into the opposing lane before striking the utility pole, the CHP said.
He was ejected from the vehicle even though we was wearing a seat belt, according to the CHP.
There were no other passengers in the vehicle.
Man arrested for hitting officer
A Santa Cruz man who allegedly tried to interfere with a friend's drunk driving arrest was arrested by the California Highway Patrol around 1:45 a.m. Saturday, CHP Sgt. Ryan Monahan said.
Ryan Rittenhouse, 31, was arrested for striking a peace officer and interfering and resisting arrest when his friend Jon Allred was stopped on Felker Street near Ocean Street, Monahan said.
Allred, 46, was also arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Man arrested for having no license
The California Highway Patrol received several phone calls from people reporting a man driving with a badly damaged vehicle, Sgt. Ryan Monahan said.
Officers stopped Illinois resident Willie Knight on 41st Avenue in Capitola about 2 a.m. Saturday and found he was holding the door of his 2006 Dodge Stratus with his hand, Monahan said.
The car had extensive damage from two or three wrecks, Monahan said.
Knight was arrested for not having a driver's license.
