Gutierrez, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound native of Chihuahua, Mexico, averaged 13.4 points per game this past season for a team that was 32-1 and lost by two points in the final of the National Prep Championships in New York. Earlier, Gutierrez was honored as Most Outstanding Player at the National Prep School Invitational, an award that went to Michael Beasley the year before.
"With the type of players Coach Montgomery was so successful with during his time at Stanford, I think Jorge is a perfect fit for him at Cal," Findlay coach Mike Peck told rivals.com.
Gutierrez had 12 points, 15 rebounds and seven steals in Findlay's semifinal victory in the national prep tournament. For the season, he also averaged 6.0 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 2.6 assists per game.
"The way I describe him is he's a program player," Peck told scouthoops.com. "He's pretty level-headed. He's not like a lot of kids out there today that are thinking in terms of the (NBA) league.
"I think this kid honestly looks at his next step as a four-year career."
Gutierrez is regarded as a combination guard, able to play the point or off the ball.
Montgomery expressed the need for another player to complement his two returning point guards, starter
A spot on the roster opened late last month when Oregon high school guard Garrett Sim, after signing with the Bears last November, was granted release from his scholarship. Sim since has signed with Oregon.
Gutierrez played two seasons at Lincoln High-Denver before arriving at Findlay Prep, whose roster this season included players from five foreign countries. Gutierrez also was recruited by New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, UTEP and UC Santa Barbara.
