Eighth-ranked Cal (17-5, 6-2 Pac-10) defeated Army (26-8, 5-0 Patriot League) in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Division I women's tennis tournament at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley on Friday.

The Bears have now advanced to, at least, the second round of the NCAA Tournament 24 straight seasons.

The Bears duo of Susie Babos and Stephanie Kusano rolled to an 8-0 victory before Marina Cossou and Claire Ilcinkas sealed the point with an 8-0 win of their own.

Stanford 4, Boston University 0: The Cardinal looked sharp at home. Playing in its 27th consecutive NCAA Tournament, the Cardinal (20-4, 7-1 Pac-10) swept the doubles point and locked up three easy singles wins against the Terriers (11-8, 2-0 America East).

BASEBALL

Cal 4, Stanford 3: Michael Brady walked in the 10th inning, stole second base, and scored on Charlie Cutler's single to spur the visiting Golden Bears. The Cardinal scored three in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. Matt Gorgen pitched 1-1/3 innings of scoreless relief to get the win.

WOMEN'S GOLF

Golden Bears, Cardinal in chase: Stanford finished 17-over 593 to end the second round of the NCAA Women's West Regional in seventh place at Lincoln Hills Golf Club in Lincoln. Cal is tied with UC Davis for ninth place a 20-over, 596. The top eight teams at the end of today's final round will advance to the NCAA championship tourney.

USC is 5-under and leads team play (-5, 571) over UNLV (+2, 578).

Therese Koelbaek has the individual lead a 7-under 137.

Cal's Allison Goodman is tied for 13th with Stanford's Rebecca Dunham and Angela King at 2-over 146. San Jose State's Erica Moston is tied for 21st at 3-over 147.

WOMEN'S WATER POLO

Stanford 12, Marist 1: Jackie Gauthier, Kelly Eaton and Lauren Silver each scored twice to lead the Cardinal (26-4) to an NCAA Tournament win at home.

SOFTBALL

Arizona State 4, Cal 2: The Golden Bears let a 2-0 lead slip away in a Pac-10 loss. Katie Vickers had two hits for Cal, but Arizona State scored three runs in their final two at-bats.

Arizona 8, Stanford 0: Taryne Mowatt pitched a two-hitter to lift the Wildcats to an easy win. She struck out 10 and didn't walk a batter. Stacie Chambers led Arizona with two hits and two RBIs against losing pitcher Ashley Chinn.

Gael earns academic honor: St. Mary's senior Bronwyn Russell was named District 8 Academic All-American for the second straight year. She has accumulated a 3.91 GPA.
