SAN LORENZO -- A driver of a speeding car was hospitalized Wednesday morning after the vehicle slammed into a wall at 100 mph on Hesperian Boulevard near Interstate 880, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The wreck happened just before 5:30 a.m. on Hesperian near Lewelling Boulevard when a white Toyota Corolla lost control and hit the wall, according to the CHP. The driver was briefly trapped but rescuers were able to free the person without hydraulic equipment, the CHP said.

The cause of the wreck is unknown, but excessive speed appears to be a factor; witnesses told the CHP the Toyota was going at least 100 mph moments before the crash.

The extent of the person's injuries were not available immediately.
